“Oh, I’m angry all the time… Sometimes people wanna feel worse! You know what I mean? You don’t always want to feel better. Like, however the fuck you wanna feel, there should be a song that helps you feel that way! That you could just ride to, and then, you know, just feel like you wanna feel! Who the fuck wants to be happy all the time? You get taken advantage of, all the time. Nobody’ll take you serious. Happy all the time. Fuck outta here.”

—DMX, 2019

Anger gets a bad rap sometimes, but when life deals you a shitty hand, it can be transcendently powerful. No one understood that like DMX.

DMX overcame abuse and injury and chronic illness and mental illness and addiction to become one of the greatest rappers of all time. Every one of his songs sounds like a triumphant "fuck you" to a universe that wanted to keep him down. DMX persevered and thrived. He laughed at his demons. Sometimes they laughed back.

No one else will ever do what DMX did as well as he did. His passion and sincerity and raw emotion could reach into your soul like no other artist. Knowing his rage has been a blessing.

To the universe who took him from us too soon: suck my dick.

Rest in Power, DMX. We love you.
